Ted's First Recording
"All Hallows' Eve"
They cut an EP a while ago. It included a track about the proposed new airport on the Cliffe Marshs. All revenue from the sale of the CD went to the anti - airport campaign. As I said they are a nice bunch of people!
I have two copies of the CD. One copy plays fine but on the other, only two of the three tracks work, so I reacon that when the band are superstars, my dodgy CD will be worth a FORTUNE! Well maybe I'll get £1 on ebay for it! Copies of the EP may still be available by contacting the band.
Track List:
All Hallows Eve- written by Ted Can't Hear Ya
Isle Of Rain- written by Ted Can't Hear Ya
Jessie James- traditional arrangement by Ted Can't Hear Ya

Could this be Paul Johnson?
The band is strongly influenced by Celtic folk music, the Punk era and such great bands as The Levellers but they are most definitely NOT a cover band. They have their own unique sound. They have a large repertoire of songs and tunes that they have written themselves which can be heard on their album "Just Another Worker". All I can say is that when you do buy it, play it LOUD and be pleasently surprised.

Biographies .gif)
Paul Johnson: Paul plays electric and accoustic guitar and sings lead vocals. He has also been known to pen some great songs. Check out "Alone By The River", you won't be disappointed. Paul used to play along side Tim and Andy in "Prides Purge". Now the three of them are back together again!
Lucy Witman: Lucy plays bass guitar and sings backing vocals. She has a soft, warm voice which makes noisy revellers at their gigs shut up and listern. Lucy does a great rendition of Christy Moores "Ride On" on the album. It is also said that she has a all round calming effect on the rest of the band. Lucy's claim to fame is that she once sang Handel's Messiah in Westminster Cathedral.
Andy Baker: Andy hails from the Billy Childish, The Milkshakes and Pop Rivets era and has played with bands such as Medway punk outfit "Sulphate" and the very famous band "Johnny Gash and The Sweet Smell Of Success", a brilliant Johnny Cash cover band. This was before tribute bands became popular. The band members included Tony Zamaitis, son of the famous Zamaitis guitar maker who was based in Rochester and Tim Webster the physco rockabilly geezer.
As well as playing the drums, Andy has now discovered that he can sing! With his "Stomp Stick" in his hand he has added an extra something to the music of Ted Can't Hear Ya.
Paul has told me that he once got Tony Zamaitis's Dad to tweak his Stratocaster for him and it came back like a different guitar! Tim had filed the frets, adjusted the action and tweaked the electrics and, in Pauls words, "you had never heard a Stratocaster like it!" This was in Paul's punk days and sadly 18 years ago he had to sell his beloved Strat to finance the purchase of his house.
Tim Sumner: Tim plays fiddle and mandolin and used to play with Paul and Andy in a band by the name of "Prides Purge". Now he is back with his old mates playing for Ted! Tim has also played with the folk duo "DAMMIT"
New Bio's on the Official site, NOW!

Ted Gig Reviews.gif)
The John Tate Review
Nine o'clock Friday night "The Prince Of Wales", Strood Kent. In fact the first time I've experienced that combination of time and place, for quiet a few years! Why now? Well- to see if Medway's "number one cranked up, punky folk rock band "Ted Can't Hear Ya" are all they are cranked up to be- or more correctly- what their lead guitarist/vocalist Paul Johnson keeps telling me they are!
In fairness- I had already prepared myself with their album "Just Another Worker"- which gives a taster of their own particular brand of folk/folk-rock songs and tunes; but a line-up change in recent months, means that the band you hear now is significantly different to the one on the CD. It's not just the addition of the fiddle- the whole band seems to have moved-up a level musically and although I hadn't seen them play before- I suspect the 'Ted' you see now is a good deal tighter than in their earlier incarnation; expanding the possibilities, with the addition of Tim Sumner on fiddle.
As to the gig; what could probably be described as a modest audience were at the Prince Of Wales- added-to by by a few remaining participants in a wake that had been held in the bar earlier that day- to see 'Ted'. What did they get?
They got an excellent couple of hours entertainment- a complete mix of music genres, delivered with enthusiasm, energy, and above all, enjoyment- both within the band and in the audiance.
Highlights from the set? All down to personal taste of course; but a few at random:
Paul's gritty "Shirt Of Blue" and emotional"By A River", Lucy's haunting vocals on Christy Moore's "Ride On", Tim's skilful handling of the "Tam Lin Reel" within "Maid In The Garrett, and Andy's enthusiastic and solid drumming throughout, not forgetting his own break from the "kit", to deliver some powerful vocals on "Cocaine Blues".
The set included covers of such favourite bands as "The Levellers", "Steeleye Span", "Oysterband", "Fairport Convention", "The Pogues" and others- "Trad. Arr.Ted" and just as importantly, a good few of the bands own numbers- all delivered in the "Ted" way!
The only minor down-side- the small audiance. I don't know why- but I do know that there are an awful lot of people who missed out on a bloody good show!
"Ted are back at The Prince Of Wales again on Friday 27th October at 9PM- Admission Free- an amazing bargain! Why not turn-off the dross on the telly, and try some real live entertainment for a change!

Kings Head Rochester- 20th July 2006
On a hot summer's night.........
I arrived to find the pub overflowing with hot, thirsty customers, many of them established Ted fans and some regular visitors to The King's Head. To say that it was hot in the pub would be an understatement, in fact it was almost unbearable and I wondered how Paul and the band would cope with playing under such conditions. Apparently the pub doors had to be kept shut so that Jules Holland, who was playing at the castle gardens, wouldn't be drowned out by TCHY!
They kicked off with the now familiar call from Paul of "Ow are Ya?" which was greeted by cheers from the crowd.
They played all their usual songs and tunes and despite the heat had most of the punters in the bar dancing.
In my humble opinion it was one of the band's best gigs yet and I look forward to hearing them play at their next gig. Check out the gig list for details.
There are also some new photos of the band and their fans in my photo gallery.

The Rick Turl Review
King's Head Rochester 20th July 2006
I have seen Ted Can't Hear Ya quite a few times now over the last few years and I have enjoyed all their gigs in the past. But with this new fiddle player chap Tim- I think our boys and Lucy have reached another level! Stunning!
Seldom have I seen a band around Medway that have so much presence, spirit and raw energy as TCHY have got, more so now with the new lineup. I have lived in Medway for many years and was around in the original punk, Pop Rivets, Milkshakes and the Prisoners era- I actually remember Andy Baker's punkband Sulphate as well.
The whole pub was dancing and clapping and seemed to be engrossed in what TCHY were playing. The temperature in the pub was mental- it was so hot in there it's hard to describe. Teanagers speak of "mosh pits" and "moshing", forget that, this could be described as "tedding"!
Tere were people falling over from dancing so much, and friendly water fights. The volume was loud, the crowd hyper, the songs, punky and right at you that you just couldn't help moving to- and a great friendly atmosphere as well, that is removed from the usual Thursday "folk night" at this pub.
If you like folk duos that's your choice and TCHY keep that heritage with some of their slower more atmospheric songs like The Oyster band's "Put out the lights" and their own Medway folk songs they have written, and continue to write- but be warned TCHY don't do "folk for the fient hearted", this was loud, fast, furious, highly charged and emotional!
Ripping songs like "Jessie James", "The Leaving Of Liverpool" and "Dirty Old Town" like you have never heard thembefore- with this raw punky high charged and has a highly energetic edge.
Storming songs such as Fairprt Convention's "Matty Groves" with that punky/almost grunge electric guitar and fiddle with echo effects takes you away to a place we rarely go to! Because there is no where like it! In fact in a packed pub full of people up for it and drinking- there is no gigs like TCHY gigs!
New songs included "Maid In The Garret" done recently by Steeleye Span I believe, although I have never heard Steeleye Span's version, Lucy sings this with ease and the song turns from slow and interesting to a powerful pacey reel with brilliant fiddle from the new man Tim. There's new powerful electric guitar jigs and reels too!
Something has happened to TCHY, if it's possible, they have got tighter, louder and more confident than ever- and I have to say, better.
All I hope is that they get the recognition they deserve and carry on doing - just what they are doing- and playing what they like , their way- that's what makes them a great band to see- you have to go with them!

Tim's welcoming Party- The Prince Of Wales- 16th June 2006
I was already in the bar of the POW when Paul arrived to set up the band's gear, so I went over and had a quick chat with him about the night's gig. He said that he was really looking forward to playing in a band with Tim again and couldn't wait to see how the fans response would be to the "new" Ted sound. I thanked him and wished him luck for the evening.
As it the start time of 9PM drew closer the other members of the band started to arrive, all eager and ready for their first live gig with Tim Sumner on fiddle.
After a final tune up and another quick sound check they were ready to kick off.
They opened the first set with Christy Moore's "Go, Move, Shift" followed by that old favourite "Shirt Of Blue".
Then it was time for Tim to show off his prowess on the fiddle with a new version of "Shaven Monkey" which then slid nicely into "The Horseman's Brawl". Great, the addition of a fiddler had certainly improved the Ted sound and I knew they could only get better and better as the night went on.
They then did brilliant Ted versions of "Speed The Plough", Rakes Of Marlow" and "Hal 'n' Tow"/Geese In The Pond".
They then retired from the stage for a well earned drink and rest.
In the second half, as predicted, they were even better, when amougst others, they played the fine fiddle tune" Nine Pints Of Roguery".
The band had planned to finish the night with "Matty Groves" but that idea went out the window when the fans asked them to do an encore of "Hal 'n' Tow"which was acknowledged with whoops and cheers from the crowd.
Just as we thought it must be all over, and the fans screaming "More, More" the band finally brought the gig to a close with "Streams Of Whiskey".
What a great gig and what a difference a fine fiddle player like Tim, can make to already GREAT sounding band!
On behalve of Ted Can't Hear Ya, I would like to thank all of you that came to the gig for giving Tim such a warm welcome!

The Rochester Sweeps Review
Ted Live at The Eagle Tavern
Picture a typical Sweep's Festival in The City Of Rochester, Mr & Mrs Tourist strolling up and down the High Street, maybe stopping for a while to watch a morris side with their strange garb and jingling bells, and then being dragged to the burger stalls and ice cream parlours by their bored children, and to the bars by their equally bored husbands. Well, if they were lucky enough they found their way to The Eagle Tavern, where yet another Folk Group, were tuning their guitars for another gig. Well, in the Eagle it wasn't just any old band it was Ted Can't Hear Ya!
Just a little weary, these minstrels were wondering if the rain would keep the punters away and should they really have another drink. BUT the show must go on and with their instruments and the PA sounding "just how Ya like it" they decided they would have just one more drink.
So suitably refreshed, the trio took up their places amongst the mics and tangled cables and then Paul let out the familiar call of "OW ARE YA?"
Suddenly the crowd woke up and realised that this was'nt just another folk band and they could be looking at having a good time after all! " Is it too loud?" shouts Paul. "It's not loud enough!" the crowd replied.
They opened the set with some familiar songs and tunes from their album " Just Another Worker" and then gave a great rendition of David Bowie's "Heroes" and a beautiful version of Cat Steven's "Father and Son". The crowd loved it, clapping and cheering for more. Then came a pleasant surprise for the Ted fans who hadn't seen the band play of late, Andy the bands drummer put down his sticks, walked up to a mic, and after giving it a tap, picked up his "new instrument", the now famous "Stomp Stick" and yes you have guessed it, he started to SING! The Pogue's "Streams of Whiskey" never sounded so good! Well done, Andy!
After yet more songs the band were about to finish up but they never had the chance! We want "MORE!" the fans were shouting, so Ted played on for a while longer and finally finishing with Fairport Convention's "Matty Groves" but performed Ted's way with the band playing faster and faster in their Cranked Up Punkey style.
So it was a great gig for Ted Can't Hear Ya and their fans old and new.
Sadly the Sweep's Festival was now over for another year and Mr & Mrs Tourist, with their kids in tow started to leave the City Of Rochester but I am sure that many of them left with a smile on their faces and a ringing in their ears having just seen and heard.....
Ted Can't Hear Ya!
Medway's very own cranked up Celtic punky folk rock band!
The End
Well until Sweep's 2007 that is!
See Ya There!

Oh by the way they record at The Leveller's Metway Studio in Brighton. For more info click on the studio's link. I will keep you posted on the release date. In the meantime there are some soundclips of their current album on the folking.com site.
News Flash!
30th August 2006
The date for the new Ted Can't Hear Ya album is booked and set.
.....but TCHY are keeping it quiet at the moment but promise it will be a 'bigger' and better album than the last, featuring more self written songs. There will be new songs that Paul has written and worked on with Tim...'New Road Avenue' (this formally had the working title 'Jacksons Fields' but the song has completely changed following Tim's input) and 'Golden Town', another new song from Paul, again with Tim's input.
The album cover and design will be done by local artist Michael Harrison. The band are very pleased that he has agreed to do the cover and design- he is a brilliant local artist, a long term TCHY supporter- and the band love his work.
About the new album Paul said" It's so exciting and a pleasure to be working with Tim on songs that I have written, he has a way of highlighting certain aspects of the songs and bringing them to life. It's fantastic that we are working so well as song writing partners!- we are 'so' on the same wavelength".
There will be more news and loads of other stuff in the next news letter due out soon.

New member Tim gets warm welcome
A huge thank you to all who came to Tim's first gig with us at The Prince Of Wales, Strood. It was great to see so many friends at the gig we called "Tim's welcoming party". I must admit to feeling a little nervous about it, as I knew Tim's presence was going to change the dynamics dramatically, as he is such a huge talent on the fiddle. I also knew that the gig was going to go so well after our rehearsals with Tim.
I am pleased to say that I wasn't wrong, and judging by all the comments and feedback our newer, fresher sound was most welcomed!
We now look forward to many more gigs with Tim in the fold! I am sure we are going to hear a lot more from Tim in the future, and I am really looking forward to playing some great new material!
Cheers, Paul

Tim's Little Bit
Hi all! The others have asked me to say a little bit so hear we go "A little bit". There that wasn't so hard! Seriously now, just say that it's great to be playing with two of my old mates again after many years, and Lucy is also such a hugely talented singer and bassist and a joy to play with.
Me, Paul and Andy last played together in the hazy, hard to remember days of "Prides Purge", about 1994/5, I think. These days we are all much more settled, and of sounder mind!
We just want to have a great laugh, enjoy ourselves, not get stressed, and play some damm good music! Paul is without doubt a great songwriter, and I am looking forward to working on some of Paul's songs with him again.
Cheers Tim

The
Uncut Ted Interview .gif)
Tedmaster: Great to meet up with you again! Did you and the band enjoy Sweep's this year?
Paul: We all had a great time, much drink, many great tunes and we had a few beers with Chiens d'mer.
Tedmaster: Why do you do Sweep's?
Paul: It goes back to when I was in charge of Medway FM and got roped into doing a stage. That was six years ago. We had always wanted to play Sweeps, now we do it every year on different stages and pubs. It's part of Ted's life now. Ted are, we hope, part of the Sweep's now with our "Ted Can't Hear Ya Stage" on Saturdays. Being born and bred here, we love Rochester and it fits all of our "Celtic Roots"
Tedmaster: There is a rumour that the line up is to change soon. Is this true?
Paul: Yes. This line up has served us well over the last seven years and as Greg sadly has decided to go his own way, we are looking at adding a fiddle and squeeze box to the Ted sound. Andy, Lucy and myself are all fired up about the future and plan to add more "edge"and new songs whilst still keeping our own punky, celtic sound.
Tedmaster: Thank you Paul. All the very best for the future and look forward to hearing Ted play again.
Tedmaster: Hi Andy, how long have you known Paul?
Andy: Must be nearly twenty years! We played together in the punk days.
Tedmaster: Great to hear you singing and banging your "Stomping Stick". what was it like doing your first Sweep's as a vocalist?
Andy: Bit nervous, hoped that I would remember all the lyrics, the crowd seemed to enjoy it so I guess it went okay.
Tedmaster: Thank's Andy, thought you were great and I hope you picked up all your bottle tops after the gig!
Tedmaster: Hi Lucy, how did you end up playing with Ted?
Lucy: Once upon a time there was a girl called Lucy. She was a princess and lived in a tower. One day she heard this amazing music drifting through the forest. She longed to join in but didn't have an instrument. Then her fairy godmother appeared and gave her a bass guitar. Lucy ran off into the forest and the band played together happily ever after.
Tedmaster: Wow Lucy, that's a great story!

A Bit Of History .gif)
I first met the band about five years ago when they performed a St. Patrick's Day gig in The Prince Of Wales Public House in Strood Kent. I hadn't heard of the band at that time and was used to hearing a lot of traditional stuff being played in the pub so when Ted turned up I wasn't too sure what to expect. The pub was packed that night and the Guinness was flowing like ,well Guinness, and when nine o'clock arrived I was feeling just a bit worse for wear but instead of collapsing in a drunken heap on the floor I decided to see what this band had to offer. WOW, disappointed I was NOT! From the moment they started playing the whole pub came to life with the drunken revellers dancing and clapping along to the gutsy music which was emminating from the "new" band. Ted Can't Hear Ya had arrived !
Today they are my friends and I enjoy their music when ever I see them.

Here you will find words and images depicting 'alternative' religions and beliefs. It is not however the place to hope to find stories of witches and demons. It is also not the place to 'knock' more orthodox faiths. Oh and by the way, Pagans do not worship the devil, in fact we do not believe there is a devil, so why worship something that does not exist!
You will not learn everything from reading this page, to do that you must look deep into yourselves.
Being a Pagan is a very personel thing. Some will tell the World about their faith and, well, others will just keep it to themselves.
However, being a lover of folk music probably means you have a bit of Pagan in you already!
What ever your beliefs may be, I hope you find this addition to the Ted Fansite interesting. After all folk music has it's roots in 'the old ways'. Even Ted play cranked-up 'Pagan' music!
Bright Blessings

Wheel Of The Year

Some useful information.
One definition of the word Pagan: From PAGANUS - a rural dweller - a villager.
It is also a know fact that most Christian holidays and festivals take place at about the same time of the year as Pagan Holiday and festivals. Take a look at the 'Wheel Of The Year' and you will see what I mean.
Also a lot of Christian Churches are built on Pagan sites!
Next Pagan Festival: Yule
This takes place, of course, at Christmas!
More information can be found on the Pagan Federation website.
An interesting and infomative video can be found on www.care2.com/news/member/362617688/194989
I also welcome any feedback on this new feature on the site.
Thank you

If you have any old photos you took at The Medway Folk Club when it was held at The Old Ash Tree in the 70's, please email them to me and with your permission, I will display them here.
No more old photos of Doug Hudson PLEASE, we all know what he looks like! Only joking Dougy!
Thank you
Tedmaster
For those of you who don't who the Tedmaster is, here's a clue. I used to take Ya money on the door at The Ashtray and flog Ya records. Mind you, I had hair then, in fact a lot of hair!
